Emergency Medical Technology

Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) and Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) are the first of required courses designed to provide students with the basic knowledge of emergency medical care for the sick and injured. Successful completion of EMT and the National Registry Emergency Medical Technician Certification Exam will allow students to seek out employment as an EMT. Additionally, certification as an EMT is a prerequisite for entrance into a paramedic academy and College of the Desert’s Fire Academy.

College of the Desert offers EMR and EMT classes conducted in a hybrid format using Canvas. Students will attend class, complete classwork online and will perform the hands-on skills lab in the classroom.

EMR/EMT Dress Code:

Official dress attire and grooming standards are required for all EMR/EMT classes. Students can access the uniform order sheet under Program Information. Information regarding the uniform and grooming standards will be covered in the orientation.

EMT students will also be required to purchase Personal Protective Equipment (PPE ) for the duration of the class, complete and pass a DOJ background check, have a medical physical, and be 18 year of age or older by the first day of class. Additional information regarding class requirements will be posted in Canvas.

Students are required to attend and successfully complete Emergency Medical Responder EMR 080. EMR is the prerequisite for Emergency Medical Technician EMT 084
