Objective 1.4 Alternate Media for Students

College of the Desert (COD) Disabled Students Program and Services (DSPS) institutes alternate media recommendations and provides accurate information to students about the time required to create instructional materials

Objective 1.4 Current Maturity Status: Responding to Establishing

Level 1: Not Started to Learning

COD is ensuring that someone from DSPS understands the alt media recommendations.

Level 2: Learning to Responding

COD is providing ad hoc support based on the alt media recommendations. COD has informal policies to support student requests.

  • DSPS instituted a process to provide timely email responses or phone calls (within two (2) business days) to questions and requests about alt media

  • DSPS provides students with information about the time required to create alternate formats of instructional materials

COD is fully implementing Guidelines for Producing Instructional and Other Printed Materials (opens PDF in Google Drive). COD is regularly engaging external groups (i.e., campus bookstore, online textbook vendors, library) around the selection and acquisition of instructional materials. COD is documenting the process for selecting and acquiring instructional materials.

Immediate Next Steps

  • Individual Deans will send email reminders drafted by DSPS about deadlines for adopting instructional materials at key points during the semester

  • DSPS Advisory Committee will discuss selection and acquisition of instructional materials

  • Educational Technologies and Distance Education (ETDE) will document the process for selecting and acquiring instructional materials

  • COD will advertise book ordering deadline

  • Library Services will review film libraries to identify accessible instructional materials

Level 4: Establishing to Optimizing

COD is utilizing procedures for faculty to select and adopt instructional materials in a timely manner (i.e., “faculty must adopt instructional materials by a specific date or the appropriate dean will determine which materials to adopt”).

Next Steps

  • DSPS is providing faculty with email reminders about selecting and acquiring instructional materials

  • The Bookstore Advisory Committee is using the Guidelines for Producing Instructional and Other Printed Materials (opens PDF in Google Drive) to create timelines and deadlines for the adoption of instructional materials and communicates with faculty and staff through email trainings

Potential Blocking Issues

  • Lack of consistent faculty response

  • Ensuring adherence to guidelines and enforcement of deadlines around the selection and acquisition of instructional materials

  • Timing of faculty section assignments
