College of the Desert Welcomes Indio Councilmember Waymond Fermon to CODtalks Program

The College of the Desert's Black Student Success Center, in collaboration with the Office of Student Life, welcomes Councilmember Waymond Fermon for its first CODtalks program of the Spring 2023 semester.

Waymond Fermon, Councilmember and first Black Mayor of the City of Indio, was born and raised in Indio, California, brought up in the public school system, and graduated from Indio High School in 1998. He attended College of the Desert and matriculated into the College's first Public Safety Academy, founded on January 1, 2001.

He went on to enroll in the California Department of Corrections at the Richard McGee Correctional Training Center, where he graduated as a Correctional Officer, and has since been employed at Calipatria State Prison in Imperial County. He has held numerous positions, collaborating alongside multiple local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies, and is also a small business entrepreneur.

A former state athlete, Councilmember Fermon has developed a passion for supporting local sports and academic programs for youth. He is a proud supporter of community-oriented law enforcement, and has been active in numerous outreach and education programs throughout the Coachella and Imperial Valleys.

As an African American elected official in the Coachella Valley, Councilmember Fermon prides himself on being a role model for youth and the community. A friend to many, he is well known throughout the area for his activism, community service, and law enforcement work.
