COD Named Excelencia Finalist

College of the Desert has been recognized as an Examples of Excelencia finalist.

Examples of Excelencia is a national effort by Excelencia in Education to bring attention to evidence-based practices that work for Latino students in higher education. The College is one of only 21 finalists selected from more than 139 nominated programs from 27 states, D.C. and Puerto Rico.

Excelencia recognizes four Examples of Excelencia, one in each of four categories (associate, baccalaureate, graduate, and community-based organizations). The Examples of Excelencia will be announced Oct. 11 at its annual Celebración de Excelencia in Washington, D.C.

College of the Desert is a finalist in the associate category for its Engage, Develop, Grow, Empower (EDGE) program. EDGE is a three-week program offering a fast-paced review of basic skills in math and English/reading to reduce the number of students enrolled in non-credit basic-skills coursework once enrolled at College of the Desert. EDGE students persist from fall to spring at higher rates than non-EDGE students, in 2016 87% of edge students persisted to the next semester compared to only 72% of non-EDGE students.
