Homecoming Week 2017
Roadrunners, it's Homecoming Week!
Events will be held throughout the week, with Saturday's football game as the grand finale.
Here's a rundown:
Tuesday -- Staff and faculty appreciation at 10 a.m. in the Office of Student Life
Wednesday -- Pep Rally and Lip Sync at Noon in the Amphitheatre (It's the don't-miss event of the week)
Thursday -- Banner-creating contest at Noon in Main Quad outside Beeps. After creating a banner, bring it to Saturday's football game to -- as the Beach Boys would say -- "Be True To Your School" and root on your Roadrunners football team.
Friday -- Pick out your red and gold facepaint at the store to prepare for the big game!
Saturday -- The tailgate begins at 4 p.m. at Boone Field, featuring booths, dunk tanks, food and more.
Saturday evening -- The big game starts at 6 p.m. at Boone Field as our Roadrunners host the San Bernardino Valley Wolverines. Root on your Roadrunners, but please be respectful to our visiting Wolverines and their fans.
Both teams will be playing for the coveted "COD-SBVC Challenge Trophy." While the “trophy” portion of the contest started in 2002, both teams have seen a great deal of one another over the past 36 seasons. The rivalry began in 1981 when the Conference on Athletics (COA), which had just separated from the NJCAA, busted up the “Big School” and “Small School” Conferences and Divisions, placing all California Community College Athletics programs into Conferences based on regions, not size. Desert was placed in the Foothill Conference, which was a football only Conference at the time, and Ray Butcher was the head coach for the Roadrunners. In that inaugural contest, COD fell at home to the San Bernardino Valley “Indians,” at the time, 42-17.
It wasn’t long before the Roadrunners knocked off the Indians. In 1983, the Roadrunners wrapped up a 6-3-1 season with a 17-14 win at home over San Bernardino Valley.
There was a gap from 2010-2014 where neither team faced one another as Desert and San Bernardino Valley were in different divisions of the Southern California Football Association (SFCA). Desert has faced San Bernardino Valley 32 times since 1981; San Bernardino Valley leads overall with a record of 17-15. Desert was blindsided in last year's road game as the Wolverines won the Challenge Trophy, 13-10.
