EMT-I course information flyer (click link)

EMT 084 is generally offered during each spring and fall semester. No separate application process is required to enter the program.  Register as you would for any other class offered at COD.

Catalog Correction: Hard copies of the 09-10 COD catalog may contain incorrect information on page 93. Please note the following paragraph should read: "On completion of this 6-unit course with an 80% or higher, the student is eligible to apply to the local EMS Authority for the county-issued certification as an Emergency Medical Technician-I which is valid for 2 years."

If you have a conviction record containing anything other than minor traffic violations please see the following linked document for particular Penal Code sections that apply to health care occupations. STATE PENAL CODE SECTION WHICH CONSTITUTE DENIAL OF ACCESS.pdf

EMT REFRESHER (EMT 085) REGISTRATION INFORMATION:

The prerequisite for taking the EMT refresher course (EMT 085) is current or inactive (within the past 4 years) EMT certification. Individuals who have taken EMT 084 at COD are able to register via telephone or web registration. Students who took their EMT certification course at another institution will need to register in person at the Admissions and Records Office. Admissions and Records staff will ask to see a copy of your current or inactive EMT certification card. Bring it with you when you register or will not be able to register.

If it has been more than 2 semesters since you took a course at COD OR you have never taken a course at COD, you will need to: 1) apply to the college to be accepted as a student and 2) take the assessment tests in Math and English. To apply to COD go to www.collegeofthedesert.edu and click on "Apply Online". Read and follow the directions. After you have applied and received your COD ID, see an advisor in the counseling center for information on assessment testing or evaluation of exempt status. You may be exempt from assessment testing if you are a member of a profession recognized by the college who needs to complete limited courses for certification or licensing.

Students MUST register PRIOR to the first class session. As EMT 085 is a short-term, weekend class, registration is not possible once class begins.

  • NOTE: The fall 2009 section of EMT 085 has been cancelled. It will be offered spring 2010 - cancellation will occur only if enrollment minimums are not met.

Mandatory background screening will be required of all students enrolled in Health Sciences courses which require patient contact.  The policy and procedure for this mandated requirement is available from the division office.  The student shall be responsible for paying associated costs of the required background screen.
