Housing

Housing is an important part of the international student's experience in the USA.  Although we do not have on-campus housing at College of the Desert, we do have a dedicated staff member who works to place our international students in either a Host Family or Off-Campus apartment.

Host Family Program:

International students can choose to live with a host family or in an off-campus apartment. Our Housing Coordinator will work with you to place you with an American family. During your stay with your host family, the Housing Coordinator will help you with any questions that you may have. Our host families are chosen through a careful screening process in order to make sure that we have families available who will provide a loving home for our international students. We have a variety of host family options available in order to best meet the needs of our students.  All placements are done once you receive the F-1, so you will know where you are going to live before you get to the US.

Host Family rental rates are as follows:

Room & Board:    $700 per month
Room Only:         $500 per month

Please review the Host Family Program brochure.

Off-Campus Apartments:

If you would like to live in an off-campus apartment, our Housing Coordinator can assist you.  The off-campus apartments that we use are private apartments and are not part of College of the Desert, therefore, we cannot guarantee availability.  If you are interested in this option, you are encouraged to apply early so that we can ensure that space is available.

Apartments are currently renting for about $950-$1000 for a one bedroom and $1000-$1500 for a two bedroom.  You should be aware that the apartments are not furnished so this will be an extra cost when you arrive.  We can try to arrange roommates for you; however, this will depend on availability.

For more information on either program, please contact cacord@collegeofthedesert.edu.

University Transfer Assistance

The International Education Program understands that transfer to the university is the primary goal of many of our international students.  Therefore, we have established specialized services to assist you with university transfer.  We have an International Student Counselor who is trained to assist you with the special requirements regarding international student admissions.  She will work with you to make sure that you are taking the courses that you need to transfer to the university of your choice.  In addition, we offer a variety of workshops that focus on the transfer process for international students.  Workshops are offered throughout the semester and they are offered on a variety of topics.

We are proud to say that our international students have a strong transfer rate to both the UC (University of California) and CSU (California State University) systems.   Our international students have transferred to UC Irvine, UCLA, UC Santa Cruz, UC Santa Barbara, UC Berkeley, CSU Long Beach, CSU Fullerton, San Diego State University, Cal Poly Pomona, CSU San Bernardino and San Francisco State University.  In addition, we have had students successfully transfer to private and out of state institutions such as Boston University, Pepperdine University, University of Nevada Las Vegas and others.

It is important that you receive the correct academic advising and assistance with the university application process.  With correct advising and your academic effort, university transfer is an easy process!

Activities

The International Student Office provides activities throughout the semester for our international students. Some of our activities include:

              • Disneyland
              • Magic Mountain
              • Sea World
              • Los Angeles
              • Camping
              • Beach parties
              • Palm Springs Aerial Tramway
              • Oasis Waterpark
We also have holiday parties and Host Family Global Potluck nights for our international students. We want you to enjoy your time in America while you reach your educational goals!

Scholarships

Although international students are not eligible for Federal or State financial aid, you may apply for a variety of scholarships that are offered on campus.  Most scholarships require at least one semester of study at College of the Desert and most are merit-based scholarship (based on grades earned at COD).  Award amounts vary by scholarship; however, most range from $500-$2000.

The International Education Program offers scholarships specifically for international students.  International students who have completed at least one semester at COD are eligible.  Award amounts range from $500-$1000 per semester.  Applications are available each semester and students are encouraged to apply.
