Science and Technology Festival at Westfield Palm Desert
College of the Desert (COD) and event sponsor Time Warner Cable will present the first annual COD KIDS Science & Technology Festival at the Westfield Palm Desert on Saturday, Aug. 11, 2012.
The Festival, a free family focused event, will be throughout the lower level of the Westfield Palm Desert from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., with interactive science and technology demonstration booths, robot races, a robotics exhibition and much, much more.
“This is the first Science and Technology Festivals of its kind to be held for children and their families in the desert,” said Avante Simmons, College of the Desert’s Career Technical Education Transitions Specialist. “It would not have been possible to offer the opportunity to our community without the support of the California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office, Time Warner Cable and Westfield Palm Desert.”
In the past four years, College of the Desert has offered free robotics camps to middle school students with the goal of getting them excited about science, technology, engineering and math. Thus far, 325 students aged 8-12, have participated. This summer, 60 students will be actively using the Lego MINDSTORMS NXT kits, learning about the history of robotics and creatively building robots out of Legos. COD is especially proud of the Robotics Camp Instructor, Michael Gubler, a Desert Sands Unified District Teacher, who has designed an outstanding Robotics program and understands that the best way to ensure young people learn is to create an environment in which they are having fun at the same time.
