The College of the Desert Theatre Arts Department kicks off the 2013-2014 season with the brilliant British farce comedy, Will Any Gentleman? by Vernon Sylvaine.  This witty, charming, fast-paced rollercoaster of a farce focuses on the life of Henry Sterling, a henpecked bank clerk, and his dreary existence in suburban London. After a mischievous night out and a mix-up at a music hall, he finds himself onstage with an ambiguously foreign magician named Mendoza, who hypnotizes him into losing all of his inhibitions. George's rampaging id leads him to flirt outrageously with any woman who walks past him, give away money at random, and steal from his very own bank.  The plot is a clever concoction, beginning as a simple Jekyll and Hyde story before a memorable cast of outrageous characters, plot twists, and mistaken identities morph the tale into a hysterically complicated comedy-of-errors. The New Yorker hails “Will Any Gentleman? is a pure farcical masterpiece that will make you laugh till it hurts.” Gentleman 4.jpg

Left to right:  Miranda Hane, Mason McIntosh and Xan Raymond.

“The first time I saw the play was at the Shaw Theatre Festival in Canada when I was a college student and I absolutely fell in love with it”, says director and Associate Professor of Theatre, Tres Dean.  “Sylvaine is another one of those great British farcical playwrights who knows how to craft a fast-paced, character driven comedy.  All of his characters are flawed, in one way or another, and these are the types of characters actors love to play and audiences love to watch.  When you begin mixing these characters into situations that seem impossible to get out of, then you have the recipe for a great farce comedy.”

The talented ensemble cast consists of current COD students Mason McIntosh, Taylor Burns, Armando Robles, Miranda Hane, Xan Raymond, Carlie Surry, Carson Graf, Katie Graves, Brian Johnson, John Bolth, Anthony Gomez, Adam Genesta, Renee Borgeau, Dean Apple, and Mari Kerber. The scenic and properties designer is J.W. Layne.  The lighting and technical sound design is by Doug Ridgeway.  The sound designer is Noemi Villela Dean. The costumes are designed by Jennifer Bennett.  The make-up design is by Lynda Shaeps and the hair designer is Allyson Jeffredo.
