COD Now Accepting Basic Firefighter Academy Applications

College of the Desert is now accepting applications to begin a fully accredited  Basic Firefighter Academy beginning August 27, 2013, at the new Roy Wilson Fire Training Center in Thousand Palms. A printable application is available on the website and due by July 15, 2013. Go to, click on Academic Programs, then Public Safety Academy.  

Prerequisites to the academy include:
·         Must be at least 18 years of age on the first day of the Academy
·         Must have completed or be enrolled in a Fire Protection Organizations course (Fire-001 at COD)
·         Must have completed the CPAT or BIDDLE physical ability test prior to the first day of class
·         A mandatory Orientation Session will be held Tuesday, July 23, 2013 at 6:00 pm at the Roy Wilson Fire Training Center in Thousand Palms
·         Financial Aid is available

The new 18 ½ unit Basic Firefighter Academy Certificate of Achievement was recently approved by the Chancellor's Office for this Fall. The new certificate allows greater access to financial aid, and is included on college transcripts. Certificate earners may participate in the commencement ceremony and are in greater demand by hiring agencies. The Basic Fire Fighter Certificate of Achievement will also allow successful graduates of the Basic Fire Fighter I Academy to satisfy 10 elective untis toward COD's Associcate of Science Degree in Fire Technology.

The Basic Firefighter Academy provides individuals with the knowledge and skills to safely perform, under minimal supervision, essential and advanced fire ground tasks. These  include basic rescue operations, auto extrication, basic fire suppression, prevention and investigation, a basic knowledge of the “Incident Command System” and an introduction to the potential dangers of hazardous materials. In addition, students will learn to use, inspect and maintain various types of firefighting and rescue equipment. Completion of this course satisfies the manipulative and academic training requirements as established by the State Fire Marshal to become certified as a Fire Fighter I. Successful graduates of the Basic Fire Fighter I Academy will be eligible for employment as reserve or full-time fire fighters.

Applications are due no later than July 15, 2013, and are available on the COD website, by clicking Academic Programs, Public Safety Academy, State Fire Marshal Training (Basic Firefighter Academy). Applications may also be picked up in person at the PSA lobby on the Palm Desert campus Monday-Thursday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Completed hard copy applications should be dropped off in person at the PSA lobby or mailed to: College of the Desert, 43-500 Monterey Avenue Palm Desert, CA 92260, Attention: Chris Madigan.
