College of the Desert Foundation adds two fundraising executives

Two professional fundraisers with many years of experience in the Coachella Valley have joined the College of the Desert Foundation staff as Directors of Development.

Peter Sturgeon has worked as a fund development consultant since 2011 for the Foundation, and Jan Hawkins was most recently Director of Development for the Boys & Girls Club of the Coachella Valley.
“We couldn’t be more pleased to welcome on board these two proven fundraising professionals who are familiar with the Coachella Valley,” said Jim Hummer, COD Foundation Executive Director. “The two new staff members join a vibrant organization that raises awareness and public and private support for COD students and programs.”
The Foundation is celebrating its 30th year. It has raised more than $65 million in that time and now has $24 million in assets and $18 million in endowments.
Sturgeon is responsible for the annual fund drive, events and soliciting major gifts from individuals, corporations and foundations. “He will work with organizational partners to strengthen workforce and industry connections via the Foundation’s growing Business Circle program, among other efforts to involve new supporters,” Hummer said.
Hawkins will direct the Foundation’s planned giving and donor relations programs, and the popular President’s Circle and Academic Angels volunteer and support groups.
Sturgeon, a local business owner, was formerly president of Somera Land Corp. and president and CEO of The Lube Shop, Inc.
He earned a Bachelor’s degree in economics at the University of Western Ontario - Huron University College and a Bachelor’s degree in commerce, marketing and finance and a Master of Business Administration in marketing and finance from the University of Windsor.
Hawkins was named Woman of the Year, 37th State Senate District and received the Indian Wells Athena Award for volunteer service. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in anthropology from the University of California, Riverside. She has participated in the National Charity League, the Palm Desert High School Education Foundation and the Women Leaders Forum.
The COD Foundation was established in 1983 by a group of visionary business and community leaders as a non-profit organization dedicated to enhancing the quality of higher education in the Coachella Valley by encouraging private and public support for the college.
