The musical adaptation of Victor Hugo’s timeless novel has been thrilling and inspiring its audiences—from London to Broadway, from Asia to Australia—for over twenty-five years. Critics have hailed it as “one of the best musicals of all time,” and no less than “a certified phenomenon; a marvel of musical theatre.”
Les Misérables follows Jean Valjean as he is pursued by the implacable Inspector Javert through some of the most tumultuous years in French history.Valjean is released from 19
years of unjust imprisonment, but finds nothing in store for him but mistrust and mistreatment. He breaks his parole in hopes of starting anew, initiating a life-long struggle for redemption. Epic, grand and uplifting, LES MISÉRABLES packs an emotional wallop that has thrilled audiences all over the world. The musical has won over 50 major theatre awards, including eight Tony Awards and a Grammy. It is the longest running musical in London’s West End, and the third longest running in Broadway history.
 
For six years in a row, College of the Desert productions at the McCallum have received the Desert Star Award for Best Musical. The award-winning production team is led by director/choreographer Sha Newman and music director Darlene Romano, and stars MIKE HADLEY as Jean Valjean, CHRIS SANDS as Inspector Javert, APRIL MURPHY as Fantine, BRIANNA FINNELL as Cosette, SARAH HAGAR as Eponine, RICK DOERFLER and COLLEEN KELLEY as Monsieur and Madame Thénardier, ALDEN DICKEY as Marius, and CLIFF PLUMMER as Enjolras. The thirty-two member cast is seventy-five percent current or past COD students. It also includes young local actors WYATT TETHAL as the fledgling revolutionary Gavroche, AVA TETHAL as Young Cosette, and GIAVANNA FARACI as Young Eponine.
Featured COD music and theatre students include KATHLEEN ANDERSON, ISAIAH SAUVÉ, CHRISTIAN QUEVEDO, KRYSTOFER DO, KENNETH UGARTE, CARRICK O’DOWD, RAMON MARTINEZ, ENRIQUE BARAJAS, ANA RANGEL, KAREN SCHMITT, ALLISON SPINNEY, ADAM GENESTA and AUSTIN LAWRENCE.
Rounding out this strong ensemble cast are local singer/actors LOU GALVAN,RICK SCHAFFNER, STEGAR THOMPSON, DON KELLEY, CARLA PAUL, JUDI RUSSO and REVAE REYNOLDS.
