Chemistry Club to Hold 2nd Annual Fundraising Concert

College of the Desert math and science students and professors will perform a fundraising concert for the student Chemistry Club at 6 p.m. Friday, April 21, in the Pollock Theatre.

Chemistry and biology tutor, biochemistry major and mezzo-soprano Lolly Becker will sing a duet with Associate Chemistry Professor and Chemistry Club Advisor Joana Ciurash. Guitarist, vocalist and songwriter Claire Davidson-Rubin will play the guitar and sing. Guitarist, vocalist and songwriter Alejandro Razo will play the guitar and sing his own composition.

Ciurash, a soprano, also will sing arias and duets from operas and musical theatre by Puccini, Offenbach, Borodin, Mozart, and Loewe. Accompanying her on the piano will be COD Adjunct Faculty Dan Waddell. Mathematics Professor Jim Parvizi will play a Persian song and a Spanish song on the keyboard. Adjunct Professor of Mathematics Jorge Alberto Perez will play the guitar with the Coachella Valley Guitar Quartet (Casey Ball, Felipe Martinez, Janine Rivera).

Two special guests will participate in this year’s concert.

  • Soprano Eleonora Topan, a former opera singer from Romania, will sing an Italian song, “Non ti scordar di me,” by E. De Curtis; a Spanish song, “Cielito Lindo;” and a duet from the “Marriage of Figaro” by Mozart with Ciurash. They will be accompanied on the piano by Waddell.

  • Cal Poly Pomona Physics Professor Hector Cordova Mireles, a baritone, will sing three Schubert songs (lieder) accompanied by Waddell.

The concert in the Pollock Theatre on the Palm Desert Campus, 43500 Monterey Ave., is free, though donations are more than welcome.
