COD Softball Team Hosted Best on Grass Tournament
The College of the Desert Softball team began practice a couple of weeks ago and the defending Foothill Conference Champions look to defend the title as well as begin a quest to host the college's first ever play-off game.
The season opened last week with a scrimmage at home against Orange Coast CC. The lady Roadrunners won 22-3.
The 2nd annual Best on Grass Tournament was held last weekend. The ladies opened the season on the main field against Santa Monica CC winning 7-2, and then later that evening they were scheduled to play Porterville CC but the game was cancelled due to rain. Saturday the ladies played and defeated Allan Hancock CC 8-7. The Roadrunners
advanced to the tournament championship on the main field against Sacramento City falling 16-9.
This year's team looks to improve on an impressive 35-5 regular season from last year as they have reloaded the roster with talent. Palm Springs graduate Karina Romero has returned home after spending a year at division I - Bethune Cookman, while fellow "bounce-backs" include Ashlee Stolarski from Cleveland State University, Miranda Romero from Missouri Baptist, and Janelle Eccles from Cal State San Marcos. Indio stand-outs Natalie Padilla and Rylee Perez look to make an immediate impact on this season's squad while a pair of Riverside ladies look to add power in the middle of the line-up. Cheyna Baltierra (C/DP) along with power hitting Danyelle "thunder" Sturm add legitimate homerun power to the 2013 team. Two of the biggest additions are speedster Roxanne Allen from Victorville and Beaumont's Alyssa Fuimaono who both joined the Roadrunners at the break. Fuimaono is a stand-out pitcher with tremendous power at the plate and pitches over 60 miles an hour from the rubber, Alyssa spent the fall at Riverside CC before deciding to transfer and play with the Roadrunners this spring.
A matter of fact, the Roadrunners boast three fire ball pitchers this season who all pitch at speeds of over 60 mph - Natalie Padilla, Danyelle Sturm, and Alyssa Fuimaono.
The roster is loaded with top level collegiate talent, mostly from the Valley, Riverside, and Moreno Valley areas - however, the 2013 roster will also feature two more Canadian stand-outs, Tori Heinemann and Jennifer Black who look to make their debuts next week!
Coach Thomas Armstrong stated, "We are extremely excited about the 2013 squad and expectations could not be higher! This team is determined to win the Conference Title once again as well as host the first ever play-off game at home." Season highlights include the second annual Best on Grass Tournament held at home last weekend, The San Diego City Tournament, a Home Double-Header against Powerhouse Palomar College on Saturday Feb. 2 (noon and 2 p.m.), our spring homecoming game against rival Mt. San Jacinto at home Wed March 20 at 3 p.m., and of course our very heated rivalry against Chaffey College where last year's game was decided on an 8th inning walk-off double by Canadian Christa Blaquiere in one of the most exciting games in our school's history. This year the contest will take place on Wed April 17 at home beginning at 3 p.m.
Finally one of the best storylines surrounding this season centers upon previous Foothill powerhouse Antelope Valley CC (AVCC) who had previously won our conference 8 straight seasons before being derailed by the Roadrunners last season. AVCC will be playing its final season in the Foothill Conference before moving West to join a rival group. The Roadrunners are determined to win the Conference in AVCC's final season and the home game will take place on Wed March 27 at 3 p.m. while the final game of the season will take place at Antelope Valley on Friday April 19 at 3 p.m. where many expect the conference title will be determined.
